AI-powered Chat Application using watsonx.ai and Spring AI

Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen AI) disrupted enterprises with the introduction of GPT-4 foundation model by Open AI in the late 2022 to early 2023 triggering big tech to release their own Gen AI platform and foundation models. Among them are Google, Microsoft, AWS and IBM. In this article, we will deal with the Gen AI platform and model of IBM called watsonx and integrate it with Spring AI to create a custom chat application using the IBM Granite Foundation Model.

2024 Meetup Kickoff

We kicked-off the Java meetup in partnership with Angular Philippines. The meetup had 2 sessions which was demonstrated by Mark Montealto and Eric Martin.

Progressive Web App using Angular Framework

A 1 hour session by Mark Montealto talking about how to make a Progressive Web aplication using Angular Framework. He started with the concepts and performed a live-coding.

JUG PH: 1-Day Modern Java Development Bootcamp

A 1-Day Modern Java Bootcamp for students, early professionals and career shifters with minimal Java programming or general programming experience.

The Java User Group Philippines (JUG PH) in partnership with Developer Connect (DEVCON) Philippines/Manila executed its 1st Modern Java Development Bootcamp.

The bootcamp was organized by the JUG Leaders and Volunteers and DEVCON Volunteers.

Registration

The bootcamp received an overwhelming 110+ registrations but 50 was only accomodated due to the slots of the venue.

2023 Software Conferences in the Philippines

In the last months of 2023, technical conferences took place in the Philippines focusing on Artificial Intelligence (AI), Cloud Computing, Java, Open-source and Data related topics.

The Philippine Java Community were involved in two big conferences namely, Software Conference Philippines and Samsung Open Source Conference.

Members of the Foojay community were included as the speakers of the conferences, including me (Tristan Mahinay). This is the first time that the Friends of OpenJDK is involved in these big conferences. Thanks to Azul for being a sponsor of both events.

JUG PH Meetup 4 and 5 Report

Continuing the connection with the Java Enthusiasts and the efforts of Java User Group Philippines (JUG PH), we held our 4th and 5th meetup last September and November 2023.

Java User Group PH Revitalization Report 2023

The Java User Group Philippines (JUG PH) held its revitalized meetup group last April 11 with the support of PinoyJUG by O & B Philippines , the Foojay.io community, and Azul .

A three hour lunch and learn session was done with activities and prizes.

How did the revitalization start?

The revitalization started last January 2023 when Geertjan Wielenga connected the Java User Group PH Facebook page together with the Philippine JUG Leaders and Java enthusiasts.

With the usage of microservices in application modernization, we have seen both the advantages and disadvantages of maintaining such software development styles.

When we create applications mostly in enterprise organizations, the first thing that comes to our mind now is how to decouple our applications.

But there will be times when creating too many microservices is not the best way and may cost you time and money.

Because of that, one alternative is to leverage the use of modules.
