Foojay.io At JFall 2024 (And The Winner Is...)

Last week JFall —the “Biggest Java Conference of the Netherlands”—took place. Foojay.io, the Friends of OpenJDK, were there in full force, including a booth with stickers and other swag, as well as Frank Delporte with his popular Foojay.io Podcast, doing live interviews with attendees.

Not only Frank was present throughout the day, doing interviews for upcoming podcast episodes, but so was his 14-year-old son Vik (in yellow sweater in the pic above), handling the technical side and directing the interviews like a true and enthusiastic professional.

The Java Community Process (JCP) was established in 1998 to formalize the development process of the Java platform, where all interested parties can openly participate in the development of specification standards.

For many reasons, the JCP process [1] has decided to organize at least two face-to-face meetings of the Java Executive Committee per year. These meetings not only contain a very warm exchange of ideas, but are also very helpful in identifying future challenges. These meetings bring executives from all interested parties very close to the Java Community, as their feedback is very important to future platform development.

Once in a while, I write non-technical blog posts when I’ve something worth sharing. Today, I’d like to write about my North America “Tour” across several conferences and user groups.

The first leg of my journey started in Oakland, California, with Developer Week . Developer Week is an established conference with different editions in several locations and online during the year. Though I’m on their advisory board, this is only the second time I’ve spoken at one of their events. Pro-tip: Avoid being on any board of a conference where you speak. It’s bad taste and casts doubt on whether you validated yourself.

2023 Software Conferences in the Philippines

In the last months of 2023, technical conferences took place in the Philippines focusing on Artificial Intelligence (AI), Cloud Computing, Java, Open-source and Data related topics.

The Philippine Java Community were involved in two big conferences namely, Software Conference Philippines and Samsung Open Source Conference.

Members of the Foojay community were included as the speakers of the conferences, including me (Tristan Mahinay). This is the first time that the Friends of OpenJDK is involved in these big conferences. Thanks to Azul for being a sponsor of both events.

Last week’s JFall 2023 was a high point in the evolution of Foojay.io, the place for friends of OpenJDK.

We had a very big booth right by the entrance to the venue, consisting of a large rollout banner featuring all the organizations involved in Foojay.io, a table totally covered in stickers (hundreds, maybe thousands, of Foojay.io stickers, as well as sponsor stickers, such as Digma), and a podcast zone, where Frank spent most of the day recording short podcast interviews with a very wide range of Java enthusiasts attending the event.

Since the start of the Friends of OpenJDK community in April 2020, we’ve had half yearly status reports, providing the highlights of the past half year, together with some stats and analysis, ending with roadmaps for the next upcoming periods.

Note: Here are the earlier reports, from January - June 2021 , July - December 2021 , and January - June 2022 . At that stage, a much stricter cookie policy was implemented, for reasons of the EU’s GDPR and similar, so that the Google Analytics trends which had been very nice until that stage (we had as much traffic in the first half of 2022 as we had for the whole of 2021) were destroyed. Attempts were made to recover or reinstate similar methods for analyzing usage, hence the delay in reports coming out since midway through last year, though these attempts have failed. And if the method for counting usage changes as dramatically as it now has, then it becomes impossible to discuss trend comparisons from before that change and after it. In terms of trends, we now need to start from scratch. Since that is not something that can be repaired, making comparisons between different periods in the past and the current period, as in previous reports, doesn’t make sense anymore.

The Challenges of Building a FIX Engine

The first day I was introduced to Financial Information eXchange (FIX) was when I worked at an investment bank in London as a developer.

I was told to write a feed handler to retrieve market data.

Bear in mind that at this time, I knew nothing about FIX, apart from Googling it for about 10 mins on the internet.

With a touch of overconfidence and slight arrogance, I set to work coding a direct socket connection to the remote FIX endpoint, “how hard could it be?”

JConf Toronto , held on May 3rd, 2023, was a memorable gathering of Java enthusiasts and experts from both the local and global communities.

The event took place at the Chestnut Conference Center, Toronto, featuring a wide variety of in-depth sessions, interactive Q&As, and two insightful keynote presentations.

Notable keynote speakers included Venkat Subramaniam and Neal Ford .

Venkat’s keynote, titled “Know Your Java,” was a deep dive into the intricacies of Java, demonstrating that there’s always something new to learn, even in a language that’s over two decades old.

The Java User Group Philippines (JUG PH) held its revitalized meetup group last April 11 with the support of PinoyJUG by O & B Philippines , the Foojay.io community, and Azul .

A three hour lunch and learn session was done with activities and prizes.

How did the revitalization start?

Event-Driven Order Processing Program

Following the Hello World example of a simple, independently deployable real-time Event-Driven Microservice, this article looks at a more realistic example of an Order Processor with a New Order Single in and an Execution Report out.

A New Order Single is a standard message type for the order of one asset in the FIX protocol used widely by financial institutions such as banks.

Foojay.io at FOSDEM 2023 Trip Report

“What if Simon Ritter’s Friends of OpenJDK keynote session at FOSDEM entitled ‘After Nearly 30 Years, How Is Java So Popular? ’ ends up being held… in an empty room?”

In a nutshell, this was my worst case scenario slash biggest ‘concern’ over the past weeks, narrowly followed by the image of someone taking a pic of Simon in an empty room talking about Java’s popularity.

After all, it’s been several years since the last in-person FOSDEM was held in Brussels, Belgium, so maybe there wouldn’t be that many people. Secondly, the abovementioned keynote session was scheduled at 09:00 AM on a Sunday morning. Also, thirdly, is Java at all still a hot enough topic to attract people at FOSDEM, where there are multiple rooms and tracks competing for attention and attendance, with lots of young fresh faced developers who might prefer spending time in any of the other many rooms.

My Summary of jPrime 2022

Writing summaries of conference talks is the best way to focus on the talk and listen actively.

Before conference speaking became part of my job, I was already doing it.

However, I don’t attend that many talks now, and I don’t take notes when I do.

jPrime is a conference in Bulgaria, and after two cancellations due to Covid, they had their edition this week.

Probably, for this reason, the atmosphere is quite emulating: I attended a couple of talks and here are my notes.

Last weekend, FOSDEM 2022 was held virtually, with the friends of OpenJDK putting together an awesome program around the tools and editors that support the OpenJDK, from overviews of new OpenJDK features, to cutting edge development with new languages on the OpenJDK, sessions on the ever important topic of security, as well as new developments in JavaFX, Jakarta EE, Raspberry Pi, and beyond:

Around 200 attended the program across two days, which was pretty good compared to the other rooms and the interaction was good in the chat, with the speakers being present during and after the recordings were played for discussion and more.

Another 6 months are behind us… and let’s take a look at some stats on Foojay, a central resource and community platform for friends of OpenJDK. (The previous report is here. )

In the back of my mind, in the first full year of Foojay, it would have been great to have had 50K unique visitors and 100K sessions , in terms of Google Analytics. Below is the actual result over the whole of last year, i.e., significantly more unique visitors and sessions than anticipated: 84K unique visitors and 131K sessions.

Over the last few years at FOSDEM —the free event for software developers, many of them in the open source ecosystem, for meeting, sharing ideas and collaborating—one of the developer rooms has been focused on short presentations dealing with demos and overviews of free tools and editors.

Discussion: The State of Java 2021

There is a lot going in the Java world lately. A lot of this is already captured is the Snyk JVM Ecosystem Report 2021 based on a joint survey by Azul and Snyk . In addition, Java 17 — the new LTS version — was released in September and Oracle uncovered their plans to shorten the LTS release cycle to every 2 years.

In a recent livestream, I had a discussion with some great folks in the Java world about the highlights of the Snyk Java Ecosystem report and the current developments in the Java world.
